Sonal Singh - Miss Universe Canada 2010 Candidate
Miss Universe Canada Contestant # 53
Name: Sonal Singh
AGE: 25
HEIGHT: 5'7"
HOMETOWN: SURREY, BC
Sonal is an ambitious, intelligent, and down-to-earth woman who faces life’s challenges with unyielding optimism and a smile on her face. Her philosophy is epitomized by Robert Frost’s famous lines that when deciding between two diverging roads in the woods, he chose “the one less traveled by, /And that has made all the difference.” Similarly, Sonal continually challenges herself and strives to do more to help others, even if it means traveling the more arduous path. She enjoys dancing, trekking, and traveling.
Sonal’s family immigrated to Canada shortly after she was born in India. She feels strongly rooted in both cultures, and very proudly considers herself an Indo-Canadian. Just one example of this duality is the fact that she is fluent in both French and Hindi. Sonal graduated with a bilingual diploma from high school and received entrance scholarships from several Canadian universities. She chose to study International Relations with a specialisation in World Economy and Development at the University of British Columbia. She graduated in the top 5% of her class.
Before pursuing higher education Sonal wanted to live her dream of working in the international development sector. She secured a CIDA Youth Internship in a remote town in rural India where she lived and worked in the community on women’s access to quality healthcare and information. This rewarding experience was an eye opener and lead her to seek more international opportunities; she worked in Brazil with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) where she researched and published work on HIV/AIDS financing. She has also contributed actively within her community since early adulthood. She worked with a Surrey NGO, helping low-income and disabled clients apply for welfare benefits, and raised funds and awareness for the BC Children’s Hospital.
Sonal combined the practical knowledge and skill set she acquired with a Master’s degree in Public Administration (MPA) from the London School of Economics in the U.K. Her two years in the U.K. were academically rigorous and culturally enriching as she engaged with an international community and traveled across Europe.
According to Sonal, Miss Universe Canada should be someone who seizes every opportunity to further realize her goals as a Canadian and sets a positive example for young women everywhere. Sonal is honoured to be a delegate and would be proud to represent Canada.
